View of Penbury Grove, a former mansion built in about 1910, and later converted to a school for profoundly deaf pupils with additional disabilities, which opened in 1975. It was located 1 mile from Rayners School, which occupied the former mansion built by Sir Philip Rose in 1847, and which was sold in 1921. In 1981 the two schools were amalgamated to form Penn School.. In 1996 the Penbury Grove department was closed and pupils and staff transferred to the Rayners site. The building has remained empty ever since, despite several attempts to get planning permission to convert it to residential use. In the photograph the building appears to be in use as a school, and boys are playing on swings and climbing frames set on the lawn.
