Using the simple search

This facility consists of two boxes, joined by - and/or/not. If you enter any text in the first box, then clicking on the Search button will search the database for entries containing that text. Wildcards ('?' and '*') may be used. Note that queries starting with a wildcard result in a lengthy search which may time-out on the server.

For this Simple Search (only) your search-text will be highlighted in the Results/Images/Details tabs. This may help you understand why 'unexpected' hits occur, and to modify your search accordingly

Examples:
Entering Marlow (into the first box) will find all those images with Marlow in the catalogue-entry. This will not be limited to the town of Marlow, but include for example Marlow Hill and Marlow Road in High Wycombe. To confine the search to Marlow itself both boxes must be used; type in Marlow in the first box, drop-down to NOT, and enter High Wycombe in the second box.
"Marlow AND High Street" will find photographs which depict the High Street in Marlow.

"Procession NOT military" will find photographs of non-military processions.
"Lane End OR Frieth" will find photographs of scenes in either of these two adjacent villages.
Finding people:
To find photographs which show a particular person, type their surname into the first box.
Using dates:
When searching for a date, use only the month and/or year. As some dates may have been abbreviated, use a wildcard e.g. Jun* 1897. To specify more detailed date criteria (for example, a date range) use the advanced search.
Results may be displayed in order of their Number, or in approximate date order by using the "Sorted by" switch.

To retrieve an image that you had previously noted, just enter the 5-digit number in the first box. (e.g. to retrieve RHW : 01028, enter 01028), or use the Tag facility described in Viewing and Navigating help

The "Clear" button clears any previously entered data to allow a new search.
Note that the 'Hits per page' defaults to Auto, which scales to your screen size. If you prefer to scroll through results, select the No. per page from the dropdown.
