| Date | Find images relating to specific dates. Dates format is dd-mm-yyyy, but '/' or '.' are also valid separators Enter approximate dates as (say) 10-1897 for Oct.1897, or 1897 if just a year is required Qualifiers 'before', 'after' or 'to' may be used (e.g 'before 1900', or '1935 to 1939') Results may be displayed in approximate date-order by appropriate selection of the "sorted by" switch on the Simple Search page, and re-running the search. |

| Photographer** | Enter the surname to see only photographs taken by that person. If necessary, firstnames may be added in format 'Surname, Firstname' (e.g Sweetland, Edward) |
| Loan by** | Enter a name to find images loaned by that individual/organisation. |
| ** Note | Photographer and Loan-by fields will offer suggestions after 2 letters are typed. Either select an item to search for from the suggestions, or type your own term. For example, to see all the Sweetland photos (father and son) ignore the suggestions and enter 'sweet*' |

| Search specific keywords: | |
| Locations | To select specific places, choose them from the dropdown list. Streets/sub-areas are displayed by clicking on the '+' icon. Optionally, start typing a location in the 'Find' box to be prompted with matching locations If more than one place is selected, you may choose to find images of any of the places, or only images that include all the places. |
| Topics | Select topics from the dropdown list to find images relating to those topics. If more than one topic is selected, you may choose to find images of any of the topics, or only images that include all the topics. |
| Objects | Select objects from the dropdown list to find images containing those objects. If more than one object is selected, you may choose to find images containing any of the objects, or only images that contain all the objects |
| Activities | Select activities from the dropdown list to find images depicting those activities. If more than one activity is selected, you may choose to find images showing any of the activities, or only images that depict all the activities. |
| Collections | By default, all the photograph collections are searched. Use the checkboxes if you wish to restrict the search to one or more collections. |
